It still shocks (and mostly just disappoints) me how SHOCKED people are when I tell them that it is 100% legal to be fired simply for being gay.
They look at me like I’m lying and say things like “nooooo, that can’t be right?”.
I have been fired twice (in Ohio) for being openly gay.
I have been asked:
to not wear my wedding ring
Not acknowledge my wife’s existence
To “just say you have a husband”
To just not answer “yes” when people ask if I’m married because “you’re not REALLY married”
To not bring my wife to the company FAMILY Christmas party
Let people just assume we’re sisters
Just make it easier on everyone and “just say you’re divorced”
These were not requests made from some Mom and Pop shop, I was a corporate executive for a large chain of high volume restaurants. My boss was the Director of Human Resources, and she would walk into my office and say the most ignorant things you can imagine.
People in America need to be educated on the reality that is life as a gay person in  this country.
It’s not all gay pride parades and appletinis.
We need a leg to stand on.
We need people to wake up and educate themselves on the rights we are denied.
We need people…gay, straight, and in between, to open their eyes, stop ignoring what doesn’t directly effect them, and educate themselves.

^^

The worst anti-abortion bill in the nation (Michigan)

timekiller-s:

The bill is called HB-5711, and it would force women who have abortions to pay for the burial, cremation, or interment of any fetus 10-weeks or older, a first in the nation that would create unbearable costs for women, including those who have been raped. For fetuses at 20 weeks gestation, a death certificate must be obtained, subjecting the woman to potential public scrutiny at a time of private stress.1

Four GOP congressional staffers indicted in election fraud - The fraud listed in the indictment would not have been prevented by the various voter ID laws recently passed.

abaldwin360:

Four congressional staffers of former Republican Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI), who resigned from Congress on July 6, will face criminal felony charges for voter and election fraud in Michigan.  The charges were announced by Michigan’s Attorney General today.

The election fraud, described as “blatant,” includes forgery and faking petition signatures including using old signatures from past election forms.  The voting fraud listed in the indictment report would appear to be the type of criminal activity that various voter ID laws recently passed would not have prevented.

“The approach taken was disgraceful,” said Michigan’s Republican Attorney General Bill Schuette, who announced the charges today.  According to a report by the Attorney General’s office, McCotter’s staff had “completely lost its moral compass.”

Schuette said the staffers undertook forgery and election fraud and executed, ”cut and paste jobs that would make an elementary school teacher cringe.”

Detroit Teachers to Emergency Manager: We Will Fight!

stoneagechronicles:

If Detroit Emergency Manager and Rick Snyder appointee Roy Roberts thought it was a good idea to pink slip all of Detroit’s teachers, gut funding for schools and then force a contract on those teachers who were returning, he hasn’t come face to face with AFT President Randi Weingarten recently. She and over 500 angry teachers had a message for Roberts: You had better sit down at the table and start negotiating rather than dictating.

Weingarten met with Roberts for about 45 minutes Friday after firing up the troops at a general session of about 3,000 teacher-delegates. As things stand now, the “new”, imposed contract by Roberts ignores teachers’ concerns while he imposes total control over the schools. As Weingarten said, “[Roberts] has used that power to gut school funding, pink-slip every teacher and slash teacher pay. He has refused to negotiate with us to solve the deep challenges that Detroit schools face.”

Give ‘em hell, teachers.

The MI GOP had a comment form! Leave them vagina comments!

The MI GOP banned Rep. Lisa Brown from speaking on the House floor after saying the word “vagina” in a debate about abortion. They think it’s okay to regulate women’s reproductive organs, but not okay to talk about them.

We are tweeting @MIHouseGOP with the word “vagina”, but if you don’t have a twitter or want to do more, you can! The link above leads to a GOP comment form, leave them some lovely vagina comments!

SIGNAL BOOST!

Also, the dude who thinks the word “vagina” is offensive, Michigan Rep Mike Callton, has an easy contact form. In case you want to leave any (VAGINA!) comments.

[NB: More people than just cis women have vaginas.]

Michigan Republicans have ILLEGALLY passed over 96% (546) of their bills using an emergency loophole

enlighteningnews:

It’s much, much worse in Michigan than we even realized

Last night, Rachel Maddow broke a huge story that has been happening since Republicans took over in Michigan in 2011 and has gone completely under the radar. Since January 2011, 566 bills have been signed into law. Of those, 546 of them, 96.5% were passed under “immediate effect”. Click through for the video from last night’s show. Pay particular attention to around 12:30 where they show it in action. It’s astonishing.

but, but, but, DEMOCRACY

Wow, that’s terrible.

I think for this fact alone, Michigan is getting +5. Sort of a “the whole damn system is wrong” criteria I’ve decided to add.
